This analytical study investigates the efficacy of preparatory drawing (the sketch) in enhancing creative thinking and resolving compositional problems within realistic plastic art. The research utilizes a descriptive-analytical methodology to examine visual experimentation, problem sensitivity, fluency, and originality in visual ideation. The purposive sample comprises preparatory drawings and comparative compositional studies by six master artists: Michelangelo, Jean-Antoine Watteau, Edgar Degas, Ilya Repin, Leonardo da Vinci, and John Singer Sargent. The findings reveal that preparatory sketching operates as a cognitive visual thinking system rather than a mere mechanical preliminary recording. It functions as a dynamic platform for self-assessment, enabling continuous compositional restructuring through deconstruction, reconstruction, and the refinement of line, chiaroscuro, and perspective values. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that sketching systematically nurtures the artist's emotional and affective faculties, allowing profound penetration into the human and expressive essence of subject forms. This process mitigates creative fatigue and ensures superior structural harmony in final executions. The study concludes with practical recommendations emphasizing the formal integration of preparatory drawing methodologies into higher fine arts curricula. Keywords: Preparatory Drawing, Sketch, Creative Thinking, Artistic Composition, Realistic Fine Art, Problem Solving.
